|The USCIS has upped costs for many US visas today, and IXP Visas has the inside scoop on what it now costs to become an American.|
Good news for those of you currently in the USA - the cost of a naturalisation application is still $595. US Citizenship and Immigration Services said last week that it was against a proposed fee hike on naturalisation applications after it was vehemently discouraged when it was opened up to the public for feedback.
But the bad news is that quite a few US Visa fees, such as the fee for a USA Green Card or petition to bring in a family member, were increased. Green card application fees will increase from $930 to $985, while a few temporary legal status application fees will increase from $710 to $1,130.
Most applicants already are forced to wait extended periods for US immigration — if they are allowed entry at all — even after shelling out the $985 fee. This period remains the same.
Meanwhile employers should be concerned that the I-129 petition for temporary visa categories (ie., O, TN, L, E, H-1B) and green card processing (ie. I-140 immigrant worker petition and I-485 application) are also rising.
The I-129 petition fee increases only slightly, from $320 to $325.But the I-1-140 and I-485 are jumping by as much as $100. Meanwhile the most substantial increase is for the optional premium processing fee for 15-day service. It will jump from $1,000 to $1,225 – no small amount.
Nine out of every 10 US dollars in the USCIS budget comes from US immigration fees, which are adjusted biannually. Naturalisation is an expensive procedure for the agency, estimated to be at around $655 for each application.
But as many fees continually go up, immigrants rights advocates argue they become untenable for applicants who make little money, which is coincidentally many of the nations eligible for the DIV Programme. At $595, naturalisation fees are already too expensive for some immigrants, who are also required to pay $85 for biometric fees.
