What has got me so cross you might be wondering, well please let me explain. In the UK The deputy Prime Minister has announced he thinks the Government should take an "Immigration bond" to allow people into the UK which if they overstay they will forfeit. Sounds straight forward except why?
Not only can people already pay an amount to secure a Tier 1 Visa for the UK which leads to residency but there are many people who enter the UK from across the globe who do so as genuine visitors for business or holidays who could now decide the USA, EU or even China are more welcoming. Those determined to circumvent the immigration rules or commit any crime will not be put off by the need to post a cash bond. In fact if it makes it easier to traffic people of illegally migrate they may welcome the opportunity.
Money is an important factor to travel. As I recall being a young man while visiting Amsterdam with little cash the fear of being broke in a country with no links to home was a real scare. Immigration Officials need to be certain the traveller they welcome to their country is protected from their own misguided belief they can survive on extremely limited funds making them vulnerable. I full get that but to take cash off a person even before they enter only reminds me of the way a seedy night club would operate and when the innocent client want to cash in and leave there would be 101 rules and reasons why the funds could not be returned today.
Governments are desperate for cash as we see all over the world taxes are high, Cyprus even tax people to bank with them and all the time petty fines are imposed on people.
I have spent my life defending peoples rights and freedoms and this "new idea" is nothing new and has been used in history. Usually by desperate and failing countries.
