Over the last few weeks there have been many changes to immigration and visas in Canada. Here are a few of the most recent updates which might be relevant to immigrants wanting to work or study in Canada.
Canada Creates New Fast-Track Process for Hiring Temporary Workers
A new hiring process that has just been announced that will make it easier for employers to hire temporary immigrant workers by fast-tracking their foreign worker visas. The change was announced by Diane Finley, the Human Resources and Skills Development Minister, last week.
Any business which has a successful and positive two-year history of hiring temporary foreign employees will now be allowed to use the new fast-tracked hiring process. As long as the business has not violated immigration rules or filed false visa applications they will be able to obtain a Labour Market Opinion or LMO within 10 business days.
This change comes after recent complaints from Canadian companies that Service Canada was taking too long to process their LMOs and they had to wait several months to complete the process. Once the LMO is approved, the workers must apply for a work visa through Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
Canadian Embassy in Tehran No Longer Accepting Applications
Canada announced last week that it has closed the visa section at the embassy in Tehran, Iran in an effort to “operate more effectively and efficiently”. All Canadian visa services for Iran will now operate out of Ankara, Turkey.
The move has received criticism from many Iranians who has planned to apply to travel or immigrate to Canada and several people expressed their displeasure on social media websites such as Twitter. On Tuesday, Iran said that it might take “reciprocal action” over the decision.
Canada Proposes Immigrant Entrepreneur Visa Changes
Canadian Citizenship and Immigration could soon be making changes to the immigrant entrepreneur scheme which has been suspended since July 1, 2011. CIC have stated that they plan to consult with industry associations in the development of a new “start-up” visa which will be specifically designed for entrepreneurs. The changes will make it easier for immigrants to enter Canada and start up businesses which will create job for Canadians.
