Move to Australia Permanently
Permanent residency lets you stay in Australia indefinitely. It does not provide you with the same rights as a citizen, but it is usually also a pathway to citizenship. In order to even be considered, you need to live in Australia for a period of several years and ensure that you have never broken any of the rules of your temporary visas. You will also need to present a good case for your permanent residency, which includes showing your ties to the country and explaining how you would be of benefit.
Many of our clients find their way to permanent residency through becoming skilled migrant workers in Australia. We help them find their perfect position within an Australian company, and once they have proven their worth the Australian employers offer them a permanent position. We have built solutions specifically for our clients who want to be Australian permanent residents, and work with them to ensure that they are on the right track. Our worldwide network of offices, including one on Sydney, means that we can offer you local support both before and after your move.
Residence in Australia for Skilled Migrants
For foreign workers, one way to achieve permanent residency in Australia is through General Skilled Migration (GSM), which is an initiative designed by the Australia Immigration Department to attract workers aged 18-45 without a sponsoring employer. The options for becoming an Australia permanent resident include:
- Skilled Independent Residence Visa (subclass 885) – for students with a qualification from two years’ study in Australia, who may be eligible to live and work in Australia on a permanent basis.
- Skilled Sponsored Residence Visa (subclass 886) – for certain temporary visa holders or overseas graduates with two years’ study in Australia, who have a sponsoring relative, State or Territory.
- Skilled Independent Migrant Visa (subclass 175) – offers permanent residence for applicants outside Australia whose skills are in demand and who pass the points test.
- Skilled Sponsored Migrant Visa (subclass 176) – demands a lower points test mark, but applicants must have a sponsoring relative, State or Territory.
Other Routes to Permanent Residency in Australia
Foreign nationals who don’t apply through GSM can still gain Australia residency on a permanent basis through. The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) is one way that overseas workers can fill full-time positions for a minimum of three years, and may then qualify for ENS 856 or 121 visas to stay in Australia.
The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) also allows overseas workers to come to Australia. It helps Australia build population in areas of low population growth and finds the employees the country needs.
Finally, Business Development is a fantastic way to gain permanent residency if you have the means and skills to do so. Business owners or investors can sometimes gain direct permanent residence, and provisional visa holders have the option of moving to permanent residency once they have fulfilled the requirements.
